Unions representing some 22,500 workers in Saskatchewan`s health care system have ratified new collective agreements with the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations. The Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) and Service Employees` International Union West (SEIU West) on Thursday ratified new collective agreements with the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations. According to a press release from the province, this is the first time an agreement has been reached for all unionized employees of the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) since the sha`s inception in December 2017. SUN`s six-year contract runs from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2024. There was no wage increase for the first two years, followed by a one percent increase this year and three consecutive two percent increases thereafter. The province noted that the conclusion of negotiations on the two contracts is the first time the Saskatchewan Health Authority has entered into contracts for all of its unionized employees since its inception in 2017 by merging the province`s former regional health agencies. Employees of Service Employees` International Union-West have agreed to a five-year contract from 2017 to 2022. SEIU-West members will also see that their salary for the first two years of their contract remains flat, the statement said. This results in increases of 1% in the third year and 2% in the last two years. The SEIU-West contract also includes an option for a sixth year. “I am very pleased to have successfully concluded collective bargaining with our major health unions,” Health Minister Paul Merriman said in the statement. “I want to thank everyone for their efforts to reach these milestones and continue to provide valuable health services to the people of our province.” SUN represents more than 10,000 registered nurses, psychiatric nurses and registered nurses across Saskatchewan.
